Bank Driver nabbed with N620,000 and 19 GTB ATM CARDS

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Dare Oladujoye, a driver with Zenith Bank, for allegedly being in possession of 19 Guaranty Trust Bank ATM cards and the sum of N652, 000.

It was gathered from reliable source that the suspect was using the cards to withdraw money from an ATM at Ogba branch of GTB when a security guard raised the alarm.
The Commissioner of Police for the state police command, Mr. Umar Manko, said as of the time of his arrest, the suspect had withdrawn N652, 000 from the ATM.

Manko said, “On July 26, 2012, around 8:30pm, there was a distress call that there was commotion at GTB, Ogba branch. On getting there, the suspect was seen with 19 ATM cards.

“He is an employee of Zenith Bank and we wondered what he was doing with the 19 cards. He was arrested and as of the time of his arrest, he had cashed N652, 000. The matter is under investigation.”

The suspect however denied stealing the ATM cards. He said whenever he lent people money, he would collect their ATM cards as collateral and return them after payment.

He said, “I usually loan people money and I’ve been doing it for over a year. Whenever I loan people money, I will collect their ATM cards and their Personal Identification Numbers. When they repay me, I return their cards to them.

We where paid 20million to kill Oshiomole's aide- Suspect

A suspect in custody in connection with the murder of Olaitan Oyerinde, the Private Secretary to Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, has reportedly told police interrogators that he was offered N20m for the job.

He said he was paid N200,000 as part payment with which he recruited four others.
Five suspects, including the Executive Director of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Rev. David Ugolor, have been arrested in connection with the murder.
Rev. Ugolor was picked up on Friday by the investigating team from the Force CID in Abuja. His office and residence were ransacked. He was arrested after the suspect named one “David” as the sponsor of the murder.

Police sources said the suspect identified Rev. Ugolor during an identification parade as the “David” that sponsored the killing.
It was gathered that the suspect told police investigators that the deal to kill Olaitan was sealed at a restaurant in Benin City and that Rev. Ugolor pointed Olaitan to him at a bureau de change where the late Olaitan had gone for a transaction.
He said they trailed the late Olaitan to a place where he (Olaitan) and Ugolor had a drink before following him home to carry out the killing.

Ugolor took the late Olaitan home the night he was shot and he was the person called by Olaitan’s wife to take him to the hospital after he had been shot.
Police sources said Ugolor and the suspect met on Sunday. Ugolor reportedly questioned him.
Ugolor, however, said he was being framed up for the murder of Olaitan.
A statement signed by the Programme/Policy Officer of ANEEJ Innocent Edemhanria, in Benin City said the relationship that existed between the late Olaitan and Rev. Ugolor was convivial and neither of them could plot the killing of the other.
The statement said: “The suspect who is accusing David Ugolor is of a northern Nigeria origin and is completely unknown to Rev. David Ugolor, colleagues and friends. At the moment, the police are still holding onto David as they carry out their investigations on the allegation we consider spurious.”
“We suspect strongly that somebody high up somewhere is framing up our Executive Director  Rev. David Ugolor, over the murder of the personal aide to Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
“Rev. David Ugolor is a life saver, not taker as his natural penchant for poverty eradication, enlarging the voice of the voiceless, assisting the poor and needy is unparalleled in his almost 25 years of  effective and result-oriented activism.
“While, we wouldn’t want to obstruct police investigations on the murder of our friend, Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde, as a law abiding corporate citizen, we insist that Rev. David Ugolor is innocent of any accusation being leveled against him. We call for his immediate release so he can rejoin his family.”
The late Olaitan was murdered on May 4 at his Benin City home by unknown gunmen.

New Yorkers celebrate approval of Gay marriage in New York

The party's platform drafting committee voted to include language backing gay marriage during a weekend meeting in Minneapolis, the official said. Democratic delegates will formally approve the platform during the party convention in Charlotte, N.C. in early September.

President Barack Obama will officially accept his party's nomination at the convention, which marks the start of the fall campaign blitz. Republican rival Mitt Romney will get the GOP nomination a week earlier during his party's convention in Tampa, Fla.

Seeking to ramp up enthusiasm among Democrats, party officials said Sunday that former President Bill Clinton will deliver the nominating speech on Wednesday night of the convention. Obama and Biden are to speak on Thursday, the convention's final night.

Several prominent Democrats began pushing earlier this year for support of same-sex marriage to be included in the convention platform, which lists principles the party supports. The effort got a boost in May when Obama voiced his personal support for same-sex unions.

The Democratic official would not comment on the exact language of the pro-gay marriage plank approved by the drafting committee. It was unclear if the party would call for any national action to legalize gay marriage.

Obama has said he considers gay marriage to be a state issue, not a federal matter.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publically about the platform committee's decision.

The move was first reported by The Washington Blade.

India experiences severe power outage

A massive power cut has caused disruption across northern India, including in the capital, Delhi, BBC reports.
It hit a swathe of the country affecting more than 300 million people in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan states.

Power Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde said 60 per cent of the supply had been restored and the rest would be reinstated soon.

It is unclear why supply collapsed, but states using more power than they were authorised to could be one reason.

Mr. Shinde said he had appointed a committee to inquire into the causes of the blackout, one of the worst to hit the country in more than a decade.

The outage happened at 02:30 local time (2100 GMT) on Monday after India's Northern Grid network collapsed.

Monday morning saw travel chaos engulf the region, with thousands of passengers stranded when train services were disrupted in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

Edo PDP want Tony Anenih to resign

Chief Tony Anenih appears to be on his final journey into political oblivion following calls by aggrieved members of the party from the three senatorial districts in the state for his removal and the State Chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbir, from the “day-to-day running of the party in the state”.
Presently, an imminent crisis which may permanently change the configuration of the Edo State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is in the offing.
This was a fallout of leakage of a list of proposed members sent to Abuja by the leadership of the party for appointment into federal boards.
Already, “leaders of the party across the three Senatorial Districts are planning a major meeting in which they are likely to call for the voluntary disengagement of Chief Tony Anenih and Dan Orbih from the day-to-day running of the party,” a source revealed yesterday.

The imminent “make or mar” meeting is coming on the heels of a major crisis of confidence currently rocking the party as a result of its dismal performance in the 14 July governorship election in the state.
Impeccable sources disclosed that the names allegedly submitted to the Presidency for consideration for appointment into the various boards by the state leadership of the party included Sarah Adetugbobo, Uyi Ogbemudia, Matthew Uroghide, Dr. Abies Osemwenkhae, Bayo Ogbomo, Levis Aigbogun and General Godwin Abbe from the South-South Senatorial District of the state.
Others are Chief Tony Anenih, Tony Aziegbemi, Giwa Egbomehe, Ben Erhilebodiaye, Dr. Francis Olifuh and John Yakubu from Edo Central Senatorial District.
Other proposed members of federal boards from Edo North sent to the Presidency by the State leadership of the party are Chief Dan Orbih, Pascal Ugbome, Zakawanu Garuba, Johnson Abolagba and Tunde Akogun.

It was reliably gathered that the leakage of the names was causing serious disaffection among members of the PDP in the state, with members of the party fine-tuning their strategies for the “battle ahead”.
The party members are said to be angered by the fact that most of the proposed names were stooges of a national leader of the party who allegedly contributed to the losses the PDP suffered in recent elections in the sate.
At the meeting being planned for Wednesday this week at an undisclosed venue in Benin, the party leaders are expected to call on the national body of the party to intervene in the crisis rocking the party in thesState and to carry out a major overhaul of the party in such a manner as to restore members’ confidence.

Federal Government evacuates Nigerians from troubled Syria

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Olugbenga Ashiru, on Monday said about 50 Nigerians had so far been evacuated from Syria following the ongoing crises in that country.
Ashiru told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the evacuees complied with government’s directive to leave Syria.

The minister advised other Nigerians to vacate the Middle East nation.
"We have evacuated quite a lot of Nigerians from Syria, it was not an airlift exercise like we did in the case of Libya because they are very few.
"From the report I got, those moved so far are less than 50, long before the situation deteriorated we advised them to move.
"Some have decided to stay behind but it is their choice,"he stated.

The minister also said the families of the Charge d’Affairs and officials at the embassy had been relocated to Lebanon.
NAN recalls that the Syrian conflict began on March 15, 2011 with public demonstrations as part of the wider Arab spring and developed into a nationwide uprising.
Nigeria and Syria established diplomatic ties in 1961.

PDP to dissolve state Excos-Tukur

The executive committees of some chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are to be dissolved soon,  National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has disclosed.
Tukur who spoke to newsmen in his country home in Yola, Adamawa State, however, did not disclose the chapters to be affected.
Attention is, however, focussed on many of the chapters of the party in the South-West that have been locked in inter-party crises since the conduct of the last state congresses.
Zonal chairman of the party in the South-West, Segun Oni, welcomed the proposed dissolution yesterday, saying the move by the national chairman would help ongoing moves to make the party in the region to be all inclusive.
Tukur said the PDP was set to come out with the criteria to be used in effecting the dissolution of the state executives, though he emphasised that irregularity in the constitution of the state executives would come into play.
He affirmed that the issue had been concluded and ratified by the party.
The plans to sack some state executives was immediately welcomed by Oni, the national vice-chairman of the party in the South-West where many of the states are presently enmeshed in intra-party conflicts.
“The thinking of the zonal chairman is also in line with that of the national chairman and I can confirm to you that here we have complaints that are being looked into,” Oni said yesterday through his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka.
“The thinking of the zonal chairman is to have an exco that will represent all the members of the party, where everybody would be adequately represented not the situation where one person will now say that he has the party in a state and others are left out,” he said.
Continuing, he said that the dissolution would also enable those who are presently outside the party but want to come in to have a role and representation in the executive. He mentioned the situaiton in Oyo State where the possible return of former Governor Rasheed Ladoja has become a divisive issue among some stakeholders in the state chapter.
However, a PDP chieftain in Oyo State, Mr. Kehinde Olaosebikan denied any rift between Ladoja and the former governor of the State, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala as he disclosed that the two were working together for the interest of the party.

I will continue disturbing Jonathan-Tunde Bakare

Fiery Lagos-based General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has declared that he would not relent in the struggle to ensure that the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan become accountable and sensitive to the people of the country.
Pastor Bakare, who spoke on Sunday following his invitation by the State Security Service (SSS) days ago, also denied that he was arrested by the security officials, but that instead, it was an opportunity for the security officials to appeal that he should tone down his preaching and statements about President Jonathan.
He said he would never tone down his preaching or succumb to pressures until the President became aware that he was representing the people of his country.
“We have been lied to as a nation and there is no sincerity in this government’s words or actions.
“Can you imagine that, as the nation is burning, Dame Patience, the First Lady, is busy pursuing and obtaining the status of an absentee Permanent Secretary?
“Does this make any intelligent sense except to political morons and imbeciles?”
He also expressed his pessimism about any satisfactory outcome concerning the current arraignment of the alleged oil subsidy suspects.
According to him, “concerning all the window dressing, the shenanigans and the charade going on in respect of the subsidy thieves, it is my considered opinion that the efforts of this government cannot deliver justice, neither are they meant to.”
Concerning his encounter with the SSS, he said he was supposed to travel out of the country after his press conference, but decided to stay back so that people would not think he had absconded especially since he was not around previously when an earlier invitation from the SSS came.
“I therefore stayed put, and, true to type, they showed up at my house in the pursuit of their legitimate duties the following day, Monday, the 23 July, 2012, at about noon.
“I would have ignored the whole episode and moved on to other things today but for the need to clarify some issues and to share the vital lessons we can glean from the SSS episode as well as other matters that cropped up following my visit to the State Security Service department. Let me deal with the lessons first,” he said, in a statement he titled: ‘How To Change Government Peacefully: Social Mobility Is No Longer Frozen In Nigeria.’
Pastor Bakare, who said he was treated with utmost civility by the men of the SSS in Shangisha area of Lagos, added that he did not stay there for eight hours as reported by some media houses but that he only spent one hour between 3.10 pm and 4.10 pm.
“The State Director himself had earlier visited me here at The Latter Rain Assembly in November 2011, making the same request that I tone down my message where politics is concerned, especially with regard to the person of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“I gave the State Director a signed copy of Sunday’s lecture and promised to send him past publications and documents from the SNG office,” he said adding that he would continue to pray for the SSS officials as they continue with their legitimate duties.
Pastor Bakare, who quoted copiously from the Bible to back his message, used the opportunity to warn those he referred to as agents of the state within the church who are influenced by the crumbs they get to desist from such.

Child traffickers intercepted in Lokoja

Members of the Joint Task Force (JTF) stationed in Lokoja, Kogi, on Sunday intercepted 20 vehicles conveying more than 103 children, suspected to have been trafficked. The JTF Commander, Lt-Col. Gabriel Olorunyomi, made this known to newsmen in Lokoja on Sunday. He said that his men became curious when they discovered that the occupants of the vehicles were mostly children, accompanied by some men and women. He said that the vehicles and the occupants had been taken to the Army Records Headquarters in Lokoja, where they would be screened to ascertain their actual destination.
Olrunyomi, however, said that 103 of the passengers were children with ages between 3 and 16 years, while 79 others were of 19 years to 53 years. He said that preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicles were conveying the passengers from different communities in Benue, Cross Rivers and Kogi.    “Most of the passengers are from Obi, Oju and Gwer Local Government Areas of Benue, while the remaining few are from Iyala Local Government Area of Cross Rivers and Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi,’’ he said.
All the passengers, apart from giving similar excuses for their movement from their various communities, also said that they were all heading to Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos and Edo states for the first time in search of vacation jobs, while some said that they wanted to go and do some farm work.
Two of the drivers, Bolaji Olusola and Adedeji Oluwaseun, told newsmen that they picked up the passengers at motor parks. They said that some of the passengers paid their transport fares at the loading points, while some promised to pay theirs when they got to their destinations.
The JTF on July 27 arrested a man conveying 10 children with ages ranging between 6 and 16 years in an ash colour Camry car to Lagos. The man, who was arrested on the same route, was later handed over to the police for interrogation.
Also addressing journalists, Maj-Gen, Alphonsus Chukwu, the Commander of Army Records, said that the children might be victims of child trafficking. He said that initial interrogations revealed that the children would be received at their destinations by some yet-to-be-identified persons, who would then pay their transport fares to the drivers.
Chukwu said that the drivers were also suspected to be accomplices, as they failed to produce the passengers’ manifest and agreed to carry many of the passengers without collecting their transport fares at the loading points. The army officer said that the vehicles, drivers and passengers would be transferred to the police for proper investigations and action.Chukwu, however, said that the development indicated that many parents had failed in their responsibility toward their children’s upbringing. He urged parents to take proper care of their children so as to ensure that they did not fall into wrong hands.

The businessman said he had woken up in the morning of July 16 with severe pain in his stomach. “I woke up a few minutes after 5 am. In less than two hours, I had visited the toilet four times. Then I felt excruciating pain in my stomach. It got to a point where I could hardly prepare my children for school,” he said.
He however still managed to take the children. However, halfway to the children’s school, the pain had become unbearable that he decided to get some drugs from a store along the way. But a few minutes later, Asuelimen barely managed to walk out of the store by himself. His wife who was with him then that he should seek medical attention in a hospital following his plea of, “Help me quickly, I can’t breathe.”
He was admitted at Unity Clinic and Maternity Home, which was nearby. HORROR!!!!!Mysterious fire deforms girl 11days to wedding

If Charity Okoroukwu, a 27-year-old woman, who graduated in Business Administration from the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Enugu, had known that danger was lurking around the corner 11 days to her wedding, she would not have attempted to refuel a kerosene lantern on December 17, 2011.

On that fateful day, she was refuelling the lantern when it caught fire, exploded and left her with third degree burns. But till date, a yet unsolved riddle still bothers her about the incident. The fire, which disrupted her life, did not affect the keg containing the kerosene. At the time, the native of Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State was awaiting mobilisation for the mandatory national youths service scheme. Now, she needs more than N2 million for a plastic surgery.

Charity, fondly addressed as ‘Chacha’ by her friends at the IMT, told Daily Sun: “When I was in the IMT where I graduated on December 6, 2011, I was popularly known as Chacha. Few days later, I left Enugu for our village in Anambra State to prepare for my wedding that was to hold on December 28. On December 17, which was exactly 11 days to my wedding ceremony, I wanted to put kerosene in one of our lanterns and it exploded. So, the fire burnt my body without mercy.

People that were around poured water on me and I was rushed to a nearby hospital. I was later transferred to another private hospital in Awka. I spent more than two months there before I was discharged. My bill at the hospital was well above N500, 000. In spite of the treatment and the money involved, I was not okay as at the time I was discharged,” she said. Charity, who noted that she was five months pregnant when the fire burnt her, stated that the wedding was held in the hospital. Her husband, according to her, insisted that the wedding must be held to shame the devil. She continued: “After that, my husband, who has been residing in Lagos, asked me to come. When I got to Lagos, we went to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebutte Meta. At the FMC, I registered for ante natal. Shortly thereafter, we were referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

“I was admitted when I got to LUTH and I was subjected to series of tests. In the hospital, I had my baby through caesarean section because of my condition. We named the boy Victor Chidera. Victor means victory and Chidera means what God has written. I gave him the name because of my condition and the circumstances, surrounding his birth.” Charity appealed to kind-hearted Nigerians, philanthropists and corporate organisations to assist her so she could undergo a corrective surgery in Israel.

“Please, help me because I don’t like my present condition. Now, I cannot stay wherever is hot. I must stay indoors in the afternoon because of the sun. Please, help me. I pray that neither you nor your children will have this kind of experience. The explosion has spoilt my beauty.”   Charity’s mother, Mrs. Grace Nnamezie, described the incident as an attack masterminded by evil forces. “How could the fire burn my daughter and didn’t touch the keg, containing the kerosene?” she wondered.

A private medical practitioner,  Olakunle Adigun, said the surgery could be done at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). He said, however, that it would be in three stages: face, arms and abdomen. The first stage, he said, would gulp about N400, 000, while the second stage would cost about N650, 000.

“The cost for the third stage has not been given but the first two stages will cost above N1 million apart from other miscellaneous expenses. If all other expenses and the third stage are factored into the surgery, the total cost will be more than N2 million,” he stated. Adigun expressed hope that Charity would be better off after the surgery.

While Charity can be contacted on the mobile numbers 08032229181 and 08033037223, a bank account number 0005774736 has been opened in her name, Charity Nnamezie, at the Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos branch of the GT Bank.

Ex-Senator's daughter kidnapped in Port-harcourt

A few days after  four kidnappers,  including a woman were arrested and their victim  rescued   by  the state Police Command Kidnappers, gunmen yesterday abducted the daughter a former senator  in Port Harcourt.

Saturday Sun  gathered  that  the victim, Mrs. Diepreye Dagi Darego, daughter of  Senator Nimi  Barigha-Amange, was  abducted  on the Port Harcourt International Airport Road. She  was said to have gone to the airport to  receive her sister  before the bandits struck at around 9am. Senator  Amange, who confirmed  the incident on telephone, said the hoodlums shot severally at  the car, before they  kidnapped  and took  his daughter to an unknown destination.

He said: “My daughter, Mrs. Diepreye Dagi Darego, was kidnapped in Port Harcourt today (yesterday) around 9am. She  was  going to the airport to pick her sister.”   According to him, the victim  went  to the airport to pick up  her sister, who  was planning  her  traditional marriage,  billed  to commence  in Bayelsa  State today (Saturday).

Amange  disclosed  that  the bullet-riddled   vehicle  had since been recovered, adding that  they  were yet to  ascertain  his daughter’s whereabouts. He further  disclosed that  there had  been communication between the kidnappers and his relatives, expressing confidence that  his daughter would soon regain  freedom from her abductors.

HORROR!!! Two Brothers caught with human parts of their deseased brother

The entire Festival Town, commonly called FESTAC in Lagos was thrown into pandemonium on Thursday evening as a decomposing body of a man was discovered inside a duplex on B Close, House 6 of 3rd Avenue. The decomposing body, it was gathered, was that of the younger sibling of two brothers allegedly living together in the duplex which was left for them by their deceased parents.

The corpse was identified as that of Akinbuyi Ajayi,  39, living in the same apartment with Toye Ajayi and Omotola Ajayi, who were identified as his brothers.  He was allegedly killed by his brothers and his body kept in a room inside the flat. The corpse had been mutilated by the two brothers. A police source alleged that Toye and Omotola were selling the body parts of their brother for money, adding that the two were caught with some human parts which eventually led to a search on their apartment by law enforcement personnel.

Toye and Omotola  were suspected to have chopped off the head, hands, private part and part of the two legs of Akinbuyi  and allegedly sold them to suspected ritualists. The decomposing body of Akinbuyi was moved by the policemen attached to FESTAC Police Station led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Mohammed Mu’azu, a Chief Superintendent of Police and officials of Amuwo Odofin Local Government council to a morgue, while the police took other items recovered from the house into custody.

Residents of FESTAC came out in their large numbers to watch the horrifying spectacle as the council officials and policemen removed the body. Mother abandons baby in CANAL!!!!

It was shock and pity recently at Yaba, when a mother abandoned her baby boy, thought to about a week at canal near University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka-Yaba.
Such was the shock, pity, and anger from passers-by, even as many cried, when the baby, still with the placenta, was found dead about 10.00 a.m. on Tuesday.
An eyewitness said the baby was discovered by a student, who “raised alarm at the shocking sight of the baby swaddled in a lace wrapper and abandoned in the canal.
“A Good Samaritan in the neighbourhood, Abdulbalai Hambali, lowered himself into the canal with a ladder and brought out the body.
“Men and women shed tears at the sight of the beautiful baby, many cursing the mother for being so heartless”, the eyewitness said.
“She could have left the baby where people would see him and take him to safety in the many Motherless Babies’ Homes.
“She had an alternative to killing her baby,” one angry man said.
A lady, Juliet Okoli said: “A woman gave birth and threw the baby into a canal with the placenta uncut. She must be wicked and heartless after carrying a pregnancy for nine months.
“I wish I could lay my hands on her and squeeze the life out of her. What happened to the motherless baby’s home, why couldn’t she take the baby there?”
Another woman said, “Oh my God! After nine good months?  Why?”
Trying to explain what happened, a woman Mrs. Titilayo said: “It could only be the handiwork of teenagers, who are not yet ripe for motherhood.
“This is what we get in a society where no one cares about morals, where cohabitation and fornication are becoming the norm.”

TRAGEDY!!!!! Man beheads 7yrs old boy for Rituals

A man arrested by the officials of the Department of State Services (DSS), Joan Yakubu has confessed that he used N50 bread to lure the seven year-old son of his neighbour whom he beheaded.
Yakubu said this after he was arrested by the DSS officials attached to the FCT command at AYA Asokoro alongside his accomplice Ishaya Dukulung, 30.
He said his friend asked him to get a fresh human head to be sold to a client in Abuja who promised him huge amount of money.
According to him “I cut off the head of Danjuma after I persuaded him by asking if he would like to eat bread and he answered yes! So I bought bread for N50 and gave him and while he was eating, I asked him to go with me to a nearby river for a swim which did.
“When we got to the river, I entered the river while he stayed away. I told him to join me while I pretended to be washing my feet. I forced the boy to drown before I cut off the head and left the main body in the river.”
Yakubu said he later concealed the head in a bag and took it to Dakulung before heading to Abuja to meet the buyer.
The Assistant Director Operations, Ibrahim Halilu said the suspects were “arrested at the AYA Junction on July 22 at about 01:30 with fresh human head of boy of about seven years old who was later identified as Samu Danjuma from Anguwan Galadima in Nasarawa Local Government, Nasarawa state. They were arrested while they were looking for a buyer after a tip-off.”

Federal government spends N2.7Billion on 200 exotic cars for African first ladies

The ongoing African First Ladies Summit may had cost Nigeria government the host nation billions of naira as the Federal Government began delivery of 200 exotics cars ordered for use by guests.
First Lady Patience Jonathan is the convener of the event, with the theme “The African Woman: A Voice for Peace,” which is expected to be attended by spouses of African leaders.
Accordin to sources, the cars comprise 80 units of BMW X3 and X5 series with a market value of N13.5 million each, while the remaining 120 are exotic models of Honda, Jaguar and others.
“Daily Post” gathered that the vehicles were supplied by Coscharis Motors, and 180 units have already been delivered to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Saturday.
The cars are for use during the 7th African First Ladies for Peace Mission (AFLPM) summit scheduled for 24 to 27 July in Abuja. Already, African first ladies have begun arriving in the country since weekend for the four-day event.
There was conflicting information by last night on whether the cars were bought outright or hired, and no government official was ready to speak with our correspondents on the record for this story.
When contacted, the spokesman for Coscharis Motors, Mr. Ifeanyi Nihe, by telephone on Monday, he said the company had supplied vehicles to the Federal Government but refused to state the number and cost.
“I am not in the position to give out the real value of the transaction,” he said.
When asked which government agency was handling the transaction, Nihe said, “Our company is still talking with some officials of the government. I don’t know whether it is the First Lady’s office or not.”
Nihe also refused to confirm whether the cars were sold or leased out to the government for the event.
Coscharis Motors is the same company that supplied over 3,000 units of BMW series used during the 8th All African Games also known as COJA in 2003.
A source said the transaction for the 200 cars was processed by the office of the Minister of State for Finance.
Attempts to seek explanation from the office were not successful as a spokesman declined comment while the minister of state, Dr. Yerima Ngama, did not answer calls to his phone on Monday.
Also, attempts to get reaction from the office of the First Lady were not successful. Her spokesman Ayo Adewuyi could not be reached by telephone on Monday and yesterday.
The Federal Government is supposed to be operating a “monetization” policy under which government officials are paid monies in lieu of official vehicles. Ministries and agencies, including the Presidency, are also supposed to maintain pools of limited numbers of vehicles for official activities.
It is not clear what will happen to the 200 cars after the First Ladies conference, but such vehicles usually end up being auctioned at rock-bottom prices to the well-connected or government workers take possession of them.
The main objective of the African First Ladies summit, according to the concept paper, is to “facilitate the flow of authentic conversations and ideas that will create powerful new paradigm for the African woman.”
During the conference, the foundation laying ceremony of the secretariat of Mrs. Jonathan’s First Ladies Peace Mission is scheduled be performed in Abuja.
The foundation is to be laid on the disputed land allocated to former first lady Turai Yar’Adua’s Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation (WAYEF) in February 2010 but revoked by FCT Minister Bala Mohammed in November last year and reallocated to Mrs. Jonathan’s pet project.
The AFLPM was established in 1997 and aims at the prevention and management of conflict as well as the preservation of peace through civil and humanitarian diplomacy.
