The Barom people of Plateau state have disclosed that no fewer than
10,000 people have been killed since the Fulani Herdsmen in the state
began its attacks on their people. Stating further, it was confirmed
that over 180 billion naira worth of property were destroyed in the
various attacks launched again them.
Giving this details in Jos,
Plateau state, the Chairman of the Berom Community in Abuja, Mr. Peter
Gai, told journalists that his people have suffered greatly from the
several attacks launched against the Barom people by the Fulanis,
stating further that the Barom people could only fight to defend
themselves on few occasions.
He stressed that with all the
terrible experiences they had gathered as a result of the several
attacks from the Herdsmen, they would not accept any resolution by the
lawmakers to carve out any portion of their land as grazing reserve for
the Herdsmen as clearly indicated in the Grazing Bill currently before
the National Assembly.
He said: “If the National Assembly insists
on passing that bill into law, as far as Berom land is concerned, that
law is dead on arrival because no one would like to surrender his land
to somebody who would not want to live in peace with his host.”
The
group had requested that the Fulani Herdsmen who are currently
occupying the Barom territory should be asked to leave immediately,
stressing that such would be the only solution to the crisis.
It
regretted the hands of fellowship extended to the Fulani Herdsmen in the
community, who were allowed to graze their animals on their land,
stating that such gesture has turned sour for the Barom people.
The
Grazing Bill aims at carving out grazing portion of land for Fulani
herdsmen in different parts of the country where they can graze their
cows without going into people’s farms and territories that could
possibly lead to violence.
